Summers Past History Program

During the month of June, Tipton-Haynes State Historic Site provides a camp for children from ages 6 to 12. Children will learn local history while they enjoy the summer day. For four sessions, or four weeks, the camp runs from 9am to 2pm, Monday through Friday. Four separate sessions offer children the chance to learn different periods of history. Session I highlights the history of the Cherokees and prehistoric peoples of Northeast Tennessee. Session II focuses on Early Settlement and Colonel John Tipton. Session III concentrates on the Civil War and Landon Carter Haynes. Lastly, Session IV centers around the turn of the twentieth century, both World Wars, and the Simerly family. Each session is limited to 25 participants.

Each week, all campers will have the chance to play various games and work on various craft-based activities that relate to the week’s historic time period. Campers will also get hands-on experience with original and replica artifacts. The ever-popular “Carter’s Raid,” or capture the flag, takes place each week, along with a watermelon hunt that will challenge the campers to work as a team to search using various clues about the site’s historic structures. In addition, a historical drama performed by the campers will be presented to parents and relatives on the last day of camp.

Teenagers from ages 14 to 18 are encouraged to volunteer and serve as a camp counselor, or help the site throughout the year with its annual events. Visit our Volunteer page to apply.
