About Tipton Haynes Historical Association, Inc.

The Tipton-Haynes Historical Association, Inc. is a 501(c) (3) non-profit organization that manages the daily administration and maintenance of the Tipton-Haynes State Historic Site. Under the Tennessee Historical Commission, the Association’s mission is to “preserve, protect, and perpetuate the historic grounds, buildings, and artifacts of the Tipton-Haynes State Historic Site and to provide educational experiences and research opportunities to the public based on the comprehensive history of the site.” With the public trust of the community, the Association adheres to the role as preservers and interpreters of the historic site’s heritage with accuracy, honesty, and sensitivity. A value and commitment of the Association is to preserve the authenticity of the site’s historical objects, documents, and structures. A hallmark of the Association’s efforts is the importance in recognizing partnership and collaboration within the organization.

The Tipton-Haynes State Historic Site was purchased by the State of Tennessee in 1944. Administration authority was passed to the Tennessee Historical Commission, the state agency responsible for recording, preserving, and interpreting the history of Tennessee. In January of 1965, the Tipton-Haynes Historical Association was formed by local citizens to oversee the daily operations of the historic site on behalf of the Tennessee Historical Commission. From 1965 to 1970, the two organizations worked tirelessly to restore the historic property. On April 17, 1971, the Association formally opened the site for public tours. Comprised of local volunteers, the Association has for over half a century strived to fulfill it mission values while also being a beacon of the community. Support given to the Association is greatly appreciated and allows the site to efficiently and effectively use our resources continue to meet the standards of the state and community.
