Tipton-Haynes State Historic Site offers visitors an abundance of history to learn, explore and experience. Upon entering the Penny McLaughlin Education and Museum Center, you will have ample of time to look through the “O Beautiful Land of the Mountains” permanent exhibit and watching a seventeen-minute site introductory video. By way of graphic panels, artifacts, and audio/video media, you will learn of not only the history of the Tipton and Haynes families but also of Northeast Tennessee.

Visitors will then have the option to choose from a guided tour or a self-guided tour. Guided tours last approximately 45 minutes and will allow visitors a more in-depth view inside of the families that once lived here. While stepping back in time, guided tours will allow you to explore the historic home, Landon Carter Haynes law office, and George Haynes slave cabin.

If you do not wish to take a guided tour, visitors can choose to take their own self-guided tour. An outdoor panel displaying a map of the site will allow visitors to become familiar with the historic grounds. Each structure will also have an outdoor text panel detailing the building’s history. Please note, the historic structures will not be open for visitors to enter while taking a self-guided tour.

After touring the historic buildings, do not miss out on exploring the site’s ancient limestone cave. Flashlights are available at the education and museum center for visitors wishing to discover the hidden secrets of our historic cave.
