Maple Syrup Festival and Pancake Breakfast

Have you ever wondered how maple syrup gets from the tree to your table? Did you know that it takes 10 gallons of sap to make a pint of syrup? This is your chance to learn all about it! Come out to discover the history, lore, and method of making maple syrup. See how the sap is extracted from the maple trees located throughout the grounds of the site and then watch as the sap is boiled down over a wood fired furnace until it becomes the rich, flavorful maple syrup that you love so much.

State of Franklin Battle

Join us for the annual commemoration of the State of Franklin and the 1788 battle. Visitors will learn of the failed state and the battle that was fought on the property of Colonel John Tipton. Local reenactors from the Overmountain Men of Sycamore Shoals State Historic Park will be on the historic grounds for visitors to learn about the formation of the State of Franklin, late 1700s weapons demonstrations, and a recreation of the battle between neighbors.

Springtime in Haynesville: Civil War Encampment

The Department of East Tennessee (DET) will be invading Tipton-Haynes State Historic Site on Saturday, March 28. Have you ever wondered what camp life was like during the Civil War? Come and learn as reenactors from the DET camp, drill, march, and conduct weapons demonstrations. Visitors will be able to study how soldiers lived in camp, examine different types of uniforms, watch how soldiers drilled, hear the numerous commands of the officers, see the various weapons carried during the war, and so much more.

Peddler’s Post Flea Market

The Tipton-Haynes Historical Association, Inc. will be hosting the Peddler’s Post vendor flea market on May 2. The day will center around the local artisan as they present their hard work and products. The public can browse through the numerous and various merchant booths while several food trucks/vendors will be on site throughout the day. There will also be local historic based demonstrators showcasing their talents.

Summers Past History Program

Participants ages 6-14 can learn about their local history through historic-based crafts, games, music, storytelling, & nature with this immersive summer program for kids. The first week will center around the site’s Native American history, the second week will focus on the Revolutionary War and Colonel John Tipton, the third week will center on the Civil War and Landon Carter Haynes, and the fourth week will cover the Simerly family of the early 1900s.

Sorghum Festival and Breakfast

The Sorghum Festival will allow visitors to have the opportunity to observe sorghum cane being processed into molasses using a mule-powered mill. During the morning hours, Maggie the mule will be out turning the cast iron rollers squeezing out the delectable juices to be boiled down into molasses. Just to watch Maggie work is worth a visit to the site! Come early as the sorghum crew will be crushing the sorghum cane and boiling the sweet juices throughout the morning and into the early afternoon hours. The sorghum breakfast from 8:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. will feature biscuits with gravy or sorghum, sausage, bacon, eggs, oatmeal, grits, and drinks.

Stories from the Pumpkin Patch

The Stories from the Pumpkin Patch will feature several storytellers from the Jonesborough International Story Tellers Guild. These storytellers will be telling tales of old folk lore, Fall time stories, and good family fables. During the daylight hours, various Fall and Halloween crafts will be available for kids. There will be various Halloween themed face paintings at $2 for children of all ages. If you dare, visitors can explore the site’s ancient and spooky cave. A hayride around the site will be provided by Johnson City Kubota.

Visions of Christmas

You are invited to be our guest as the site begins the celebration of the holiday season. Experience what it was like for the various families that lived at Tipton-Haynes during the Eighteenth through Twentieth Centuries. Come see the glow of oil lamps and the smell of holiday greenery that will adorn the historic house. Reenactors and volunteers will be in period clothing to recreate the atmosphere of the excitement leading up to Christmas and teach about the different traditions of the holiday season. Enjoy family fun as holiday snacks and drinks will be prepared over the open hearth in the cabin.

Stories from the Pumpkin Patch

Enjoy a family friendly evening with fun crafts and great stories. Halloween crafts for kids will be offered during daylight hours. Storytellers will be within the mid-1800s barn. Take a spooky hayride around the historic grounds. Admission is $6 for adults and $3 for children twelve and under. Tipton-Haynes members are free!

Fall Overnight Camp

Campers age 6-14 will enjoy an overnight stay at the site. Parents can drop campers off after 4pm on Friday. A hot dog supper will be provided along with breakfast and a pizza lunch on Saturday. Campers will play time period games before being picked up by parents on Saturday before 4pm. Price is $50 per camper.
